A Compelling Investment Case
Agroforestry acts as a Swiss Army Knife for delivering impact in a regenerative agriculture setting. Through the relatively simple act of commingling trees, crops, and/or animals together, research has shown that agroforestry can:
1) sequester carbon, 2) protect against soil erosion, 3) restore nutrients to the soil and our food, 4) cleanse drinking water supplies, 5) enhance biodiversity and pollinator presence, and 6) stabilize farm incomes and wealth.
Trees and their root structures work to retain water and bind soil together, while creating symbiotic relationships with plant, animal, and insect life in their vicinity. The right types of trees can also offer improved income benefits for farmers, landowners, and investors.
Agroforestry Partners currently focuses on planting chestnut trees on conventional corn/soybean farms in the eastern United States. Chestnut trees are well adapted to the soils in this region, naturally inclined to perform well on non-irrigated land so common in this part of the country. Importantly, the economics of chestnuts are favorable, with a large global market and the ability to displace low-quality imports into the U.S. at attractive prices. The American chestnut market is small today, offering plenty of runway akin to the 50+ year stretch of favorable growth seen in the U.S. pistachio market. Agroforestry Partners has built a coalition of strategic partners upstream and downstream, giving the fund confidence in its ability to return a targeted net IRR of 15%-20% to investors over a 20-year term, alongside a 20%-40% improvement in farm-level income.
